Graduation Checklist

Important Reminders

  • Please check the graduate graduation deadlines.
  • If you are planning to leave UNC before graduation, please make sure to finish any Graduate School business before you leave.
  • All graduation applications need to be fully completed. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  • Doctoral students and educational specialists: Please make sure your Plan of Study is filed with the Graduate School by the end of the first semester of enrollment after admission.
  • If you need to fill out a form, please visit the Graduate School forms page.

Non-Thesis Master's

Thesis Master's

  • Submit the graduation application.
  • Thesis format check: You may schedule an appointment or drop by the Graduate School. Please allow 15-30 minutes.
  • Confirm that your committee chair has reported results of comps and/or defense of thesis in lieu of comps or equivalent to the Graduate School by the published deadline.
  • Final review: Prior to the deadline, turn in one copy of your thesis and signed signature pages to the Graduate School for approval (allow two weeks to receive edits), complete Binding Forms. All committee signatures must be obtained prior to submission of thesis.
  • After Graduate School approval, deliver four copies of your thesis to the Graduate School: One copy on 25% or higher cotton, 20 lb. paper; three copies on plain 20 lb. paper. The Graduate School will bill your student account.

Doctoral Scholarly Project: Audiology and Doctor of Nursing Practice

  • Submit a Request to Appoint a Doctoral Committee to the Graduate School.
  • Submit the Application for Graduation in a Doctoral Program.
  • Format check: You may schedule an appointment or drop by the Graduate School. Please allow 15-30 minutes.
  • Final doctoral scholarly project review: Turn in one copy of your doctoral scholarly project and signed signature pages to the Graduate School for approval. Complete the binding forms (allow two weeks to receive edits). All committee signatures must be obtained prior to submission of the doctoral scholarly project.
  • After you receive approval from the Graduate School, deliver four copies of the doctoral scholarly project to the Graduate School: One copy on 25% or higher cotton, 20 lb. paper; three copies on plain 20 lb. paper. The Graduate School will bill your student account.

Doctoral

  • Submit a Request to Appoint a Doctoral Committee to the Graduate School.
  • Required Steps in Candidacy:
    • Passed written comprehensive. The program generates form to send results to the Graduate School.
      • Schedule oral comprehensive at least two weeks prior to the requested date (allow time to make changes or address committee concerns).
      • The Graduate School will send the results form to the committee chair.
    • Passed oral comprehensive. Committee chair should send results to the Graduate School within one semester. (Results form must originate from the Grad School.)
    • Discuss with the chair of your committee which publication style manual you are going to use to write your dissertation.
    • Submit a committee-approved proposal to the Graduate School. Please make sure we have your current mailing and email address and specific style manual you are going to use to write your dissertation.
    • A confirmation of candidacy will be mailed to you and a copy will be sent to the committee chair.
  • Degree Grad Check is triggered when you enter into candidacy. Upon being admitted to candidacy, the Graduate School will complete and mail a Grad Check to the student.
  • Format check: You may schedule an appointment or drop by the Graduate School. Please allow 15-30 minutes.
  • Schedule defense of dissertation with the Graduate School. This must be received at least two weeks prior to your requested defense of dissertation date to allow time to address changes or committee concerns and publish an announcement in UNC Today. Your committee chair should send the results to the Graduate School before the review can be done.
  • Turn in one copy of your dissertation and signed signature pages to the Graduate School for final approval, (allow two weeks to receive edits.) Complete final forms. All committee signatures must be obtained before you turn in your dissertation for final review.
  • After you receive approval from the Graduate School, deliver the final copies of your dissertation: One copy on 25% or higher cotton, 20 lb. paper; three copies on plain 20 lb. paper. The Graduate School will bill your student account.
